We Should Desire Peace

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

1Peter 3:10-11 For "Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it.

It demands effort to obtain peace and keep on pursuing it.

Jesus came to bring peace

Ephesians 2:14-17 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near.

The Gospel is the "good news of peace"

Acts 10:36 ...preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ...

Ephesians 6:15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.

Psalms 119:165 Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.

What Kind Of Peace Are We Considering?

What kind of peace is a fruit of the Spirit? Is it world peace? Is it peace in our homes? Could it be internal peace? It is "peace with God!"

The peace that matters is the result of our reconciliation with God

The Gospel is a message of peace because it promotes the reconciliation of man with God in the blood of Christ

Colossians 1:19-20 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Romans 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Our Peace Is Rooted In Our Relationship With God

Peace is a product of being right with God and is in our own hearts.

Philippians 4:5-7 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Peace from our relationship with God will manifest itself in our actions.

With the fruit of peace, conflict and stress (anxiety) tend to fade.

It will be evident in how we interact with fellow Christians and the world

Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.

2Corinthians 13:11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.

Romans 12:16-18 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Romans 14:19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

Hebrews 12:14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

Ephesians 4:1-3 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

This peace comes only from God through Christ and is ours only as we maintain a right relationship with Him based on His word.

Romans 8:6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

We will not find this peace in human wisdom, philosophy, psychology, sociology, etc. It is revealed only in God's Word -- the last place most think of looking. God knows real peace and how to attain and maintain.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Because He is the true way to God Jesus can promise peace. If we reject the truth about God and our responsibilities to Him, then our hopes will be blighted by fear, no matter what soothing lies we tell ourselves.

John 16:33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."

In the world we have tribulation; in Christ we have peace.

True peace and rest is found in Christ, right in the midst of a world of trial and trouble. A peace that comes from our reconciliation with God

Do You Have This Peace?

Do you feel a need for peace about yourself? At work? In your family?

These things are temporary. Change your perspective.

Romans 14:7-8 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's.

If you are right with God temporal things cannot cause you lasting harm.

If you want peace cultivate the habits of prayer, study and meditation.

One rarely at peace is probably not praying and studying on a regular basis.

So, set aside some quiet time and get in touch with God.

Obedience Can Free You From The Burdens Of Life

1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1Peter 3:21-22 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.
